WHAT WE DO
SurfAid, in partnership with communities and government, works to prevent disease, suffering and death through educational programs and health promotion that aim to change poor health behaviours and reduce the risk from natural disasters. SurfAid’s goal is to empower communities to help themselves and build local capacity so their improved health resilience is sustainable. We advocate health and well-being for all and create collaborative relationships with other stakeholder groups wherever we can so as to further sustained change in behavior and development. WHERE WE DO
We deliver our programs in the Mentawai Islands, 150km (90 miles) off Indonesia’s West Sumatran coast, Nias Island, 125km (80 miles) off the North Sumatran Coast, Banyak Islands (off North Sumatra/Aceh) to the north of Nias, and Telo Island to the south. These are ancient cultures and many of the villages where we work are isolated and difficult to access.
SurdAid is calling for companies and industries to enter teams into the BlackBerry SurfAid Cup. The fundraising event for SurfAid will be held on Friday 2 November at Queenscliff Beach, Sudney. This is a team-networking event with the opportunity to raise much-needed funds for SurfAid. A pro/former pro surfer will be available to join each team A maximum of 18 teams will be competing on that day.

WHY WE DO
Nearly one in 10 Mentawai children do not make it to the age of five ...
There are 8.8 million children under five dying worldwide each year (UN Report June 2010). SurfAid’s research (conducted with the University of Indonesia) shows that nearly one in 10 Mentawai children do not make it to the age of five, which is 15 times the death rate in developed countries where, on average, there are six deaths for every 1,000 live births. |
